Dissertation *sigh

Just a small enquiry to all,
Is anyone else really stuck with an angle for their dissertation, more specifically how to link it with practical work?? I literally have no idea,
if anyone is doing better with this
let me know!!!

At the moment I'm thinking I'll do Graphic novels as a literary form (and whether they will ever stand on par with the more common literature like normal novels) although I'm sure I'll get told that is shite >.>

I think the key is just to think what you're interested in...for example I suggested to Guy to do about the use of watercolours in childrens books...I'm sure as long as you have a vague idea the turos will be able to direct you.

You could do something about the darker side of childrens books and stories (edward gorey, fairytales with people being decapitated etc)...Since that would fit with the style of work you did...Or look at the pencil medium and how it has developed through the history of the childrens book...I don't know if that helps >.>! I realise thats vague but my idea is still but I reckon as long as you have a solid basis then the tutor can help you get it right!

Hope that helps!

Ta for that Jess yeah helps a lot, your idea sounds really good I did something similar to that for my presentation + essay last year, I can recommend a real useful book on the subject, it's called 'This Book Contains Graphic Language - Comics as Literature' by Rocco Versaci. I picked it up randomly in Waterstones and it turned out to be an invaluable source of info! Definitely worth the read.

I seem to know a lot about comics and graphic novels and stuff...but I don't want to draw them hah! Gonna look into the darker children's book idea...thanks for that, my brain is obviously not working coherently at the moment...!!

Yeh I'm totally stuck!! I was thinking of doing something around the media I'm doing.. Like watercolors in children's books and how it has changed over the years?. Maybe the variety of styles.
My worry is I don't know if I'll have enough to write 5000 thousand words on.
Gonna put at the back of my mind for now though,, gonna see what Chiu says and the THS tutor says who ever that is!

Heh it is a great book! I bought it on amazon and are currently working through it! Makes you think so much! Maybe we could all discuss dissertations on Tuesday, it might help everyone who is stuck and then people can recommend books they know and such? Just an idea since most people I talk to are like "dissertation...gnrrrggghhh!"

hi yous!!

all very productive!! And must, must, must see yourselves as practitioners (not students) who are on a mission, and to get there you must equip yourself with that mighty knowledge - be broad to begin with, so if Guy wants to look at some Arthur Rackham and then move on to Quentin Blake, Ralph Steadman or Micheal Foreman, or any other contemporary illustrators he can. The important thing is you are searching at the moment, so don't immediately think that the material you find has to be in your Dissertation now! You may eventually only use 10% of what you have found and write an essay titled:

A comparative study of Watercolour picture book illustrators of the 80's and their continued influence on contemporary picture book illustration of today - looking at John Burningham, Emma Chichester Clark and so forth.

or you maybe even more specfic in content:

the use of monsters in picture books - or a title such as:

How monsters in children's picture books are no longer scary! - a comparative study of monster picture books with parallels to our changing views on politically correctness

the key is not to look for one essay title, but to write as many as possible - combine bits and pieces, edit out others and construct a proposal which excites you!!! and yes Tuesday is a great day to talk about it!!

I think I'm probably gonna have a more useful discussion with you guys on tuesday than with the THS tutor! Looking forward to it
